Subscription Entitlements

Subscription entitlements represent the resolved, effective values of features for a specific subscription. They are computed by aggregating entitlement values from the subscribed rate plan and all active addons, with support for manual overrides.

Entitlements set at the subscription level take precedence over product-level entitlements.

Viewing Subscription Entitlements

URL: /app/customers/{customerId}/subscriptions/{subscriptionId} → Entitlements tab

The entitlements tab displays a table with the following columns:

ColumnDescription
FeatureFeature name and feature key
TypeFeature type badge (Switch, Quantity, Range, Custom)
Effective ValueThe resolved entitlement value
SourceWhere the value comes from — Plan + Addons, or OVERRIDDEN badge
Override ExpiryExpiration date for time-limited overrides, or ”—” for permanent values
ActionsRemove Override button (visible only for overridden entitlements)

Value Display Format

Switch“Enabled” or “Disabled”
QuantityNumeric value (e.g., “15,000”)
Range“min – max” (e.g., “1 – 75”)
CustomLevel name (e.g., “Phone Support”)

Overriding Entitlements

Overrides let you grant additional features or modify entitlement levels for individual subscriptions — without changing the product catalog.

Use Cases for Overrides

  • Granting a customer temporary access to a premium feature during a trial
  • Providing additional capacity as part of a custom deal
  • Compensating a customer by upgrading their support tier
  • Enabling a beta feature for specific subscribers

Adding an Override

  1. Navigate to the subscription’s Entitlements tab.
  2. Click Add Override.
  3. Select the feature to override.
  4. Set the override value based on the feature type.
  5. Choose the duration:
    • Forever — The override persists indefinitely.
    • Until — Set an expiration date (must be a future date). The override reverts automatically when the date passes.
  6. Optionally add an Override Reason for audit purposes.
  7. Click Confirm.

Overridden entitlements display an OVERRIDDEN badge in the Source column.

Removing an Override

  1. Navigate to the subscription’s Entitlements tab.
  2. Find the overridden entitlement (marked with the OVERRIDDEN badge).
  3. Click the Remove Override action.
  4. Confirm the removal.

Removing an override triggers re-resolution — the entitlement reverts to the value computed from the rate plan and addons.

Re-Resolving Entitlements

Entitlement resolution recomputes subscription entitlements from the current rate plan and addon values. This is useful when product entitlements have been updated and you want to propagate changes.

To re-resolve:

  1. Navigate to the subscription’s Entitlements tab.
  2. Click Re-resolve.
  3. BillHive fetches the current rate plan and addon feature values, aggregates them, and updates the subscription entitlements.

Important: Overrides are preserved during re-resolution. Only non-overridden entitlements are recomputed.

Resolution Rules

When entitlements are resolved, BillHive aggregates values from the rate plan and all active addons:

Feature TypeRuleDetails
SwitchOREnabled if any source enables it
QuantitySUMAll values added together
RangeSUMMin and max values summed; capped by the feature’s maximum value
CustomHIGHESTThe highest-positioned level in the custom levels array wins

FAQ

Can I add a feature that isn’t in the rate plan or addons? Yes. Use the Add Override flow to attach any active feature to a subscription, regardless of the product catalog configuration.

What happens to overrides when a subscription is upgraded? Overrides are preserved. When entitlements are re-resolved after a plan change, overridden values remain untouched while non-overridden values are recomputed from the new plan.

Do entitlements track usage? No. Entitlements define what a customer is allowed to use, not what they have actually consumed. Monitor usage separately (e.g., via Usage-Based Billing) and compare against entitlement values.

Can overrides expire automatically? Yes. When creating an override, select Until and set an expiration date. The override will revert automatically when the date passes.
