Feature Management
This guide covers how to create, edit, activate, and manage features in BillHive.
Creating a Feature
URL: /app/catalogue/products/{productId}/features/add
- Navigate to Products and select the product you want to add a feature to.
- Go to the Features tab and click Add Feature.
- Fill in the feature form:
General Information
| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| External Name | No | Display name shown on pricing tables and the customer portal. |
| Name | Yes | Internal name used in the admin panel. |
| Feature Key | Yes | Auto-generated from the name (lowercase, hyphen-separated). Used in API calls. Cannot be changed after creation. |
| Description | No | Internal description for admin reference. |
Feature Type & Defaults
Select one of the four feature types. The form updates dynamically based on your selection:
Switch:
- Default Value — Choose “On” or “Off”. Default: Off.
Quantity:
- Default Quantity — Enter the default numeric value.
- Unit of Measurement — Label for the unit (e.g., “API calls”, “users”).
Range:
- Min Value — Minimum bound.
- Max Value — Maximum bound.
- Unit of Measurement — Label for the unit (e.g., “GB”, “requests/min”).
Custom:
- Custom Levels — Add level names one by one (e.g., “Email Support”, “Chat Support”, “Phone Support”). Order matters — levels later in the list are considered higher.
- Default Value — Select one of the defined levels as the default.
Visibility
- Visible in Portal — Toggle whether this feature appears on the customer self-serve portal. Default: visible.
- Click Save to create the feature in Draft status.
Editing a Feature
URL: /app/catalogue/products/{productId}/features/{featureId}/edit
- Navigate to the product’s Features tab.
- Click the feature you want to edit.
- Modify the allowed fields and click Save.
Constraints:
- Feature Key cannot be changed after creation.
- Feature Type cannot be changed after creation.
- You can add new custom levels, but cannot remove levels that are already mapped to rate plans or addons.
Activating a Feature
Features are created in Draft status. Activating a feature makes its entitlements take effect for subscribers.
Before activating, ensure that:
- The feature is attached to the applicable rate plans and/or addons with correct values.
- The entitlement values are reviewed and confirmed.
To activate:
- Navigate to the feature detail page.
- Click Activate.
The feature status changes from Draft to Active, and entitlements become effective for all subscriptions containing the associated rate plans and addons.
Deactivating a Feature
Deactivating a feature sets its status to Inactive:
- Existing entitlements remain in place but cannot be modified.
- New entitlements cannot be added.
- The feature can be reactivated later.
To deactivate:
- Navigate to the feature detail page.
- Click Deactivate.
Deleting a Feature
Only features in Draft or Inactive status can be deleted.
Warning: Deleting a feature permanently removes it and all related entitlements. This action cannot be undone.
To delete:
- Navigate to the feature detail page.
- Click Delete.
- Confirm the deletion.
Best Practices
- Use consistent Feature Keys — Feature keys are used in API calls. Use a clear naming convention (e.g.,
sso-access,api-calls-monthly,support-tier). - Start in Draft — Configure all entitlement mappings before activating a feature.
- Use External Names — Set an external name for customer-facing features so pricing tables and portals display friendly labels.
- Set Units of Measurement — For Quantity and Range types, always set a unit so values are meaningful (e.g., “10,000 API calls” vs just “10,000”).
